The First Continental Congress

August 10 1774
Boston

55 delegates from the 13 colonies including:
John Adams                representing             Massachuttess
John Hancock             representing             Massachuttess
Patrick Henry             representing             Virginia
George Washington    representing             Virginia

  1. To oppose the stronghold on their liberties.
  2. Britain had imposed Martial law in Massachuttes and people from other colonies felt it was only a matter of time before they passed this in the other colonies.
  3. To unite the 13 colonies : 13 clocks beating all at once, 13 ships sailing all at once.

After 2 months of arguing and beliguering the congress came up with the unified message for Britain: Until unified rights are restored all colonies will stop trade with Britain. All militia is to arm in readiness.

  1. What does this mean?
  2. What are militia?
  3. How would stopping trade with Britain effect both sides?

This meeting was highly illegal and all members would have been hung for treason.
